Upside Foods, formerly known as Memphis Meats, has made significant advancements in the cultivated meat industry. The company, which rebranded in 2021, has been at the forefront of developing lab-grown meat products. In 2016, Upside Foods produced the world's
first cultivated beef meatball, followed by cultivated chicken and duck in 2017. A major breakthrough came in November 2022 when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a 'No Questions' letter, indicating acceptance of the safety data for Upside Foods' cultivated chicken. This was a pivotal moment for the company, as it paved the way for USDA clearance in June 2023. Subsequently, in July 2023, Upside Foods served its cultivated chicken commercially for the first time at Bar Crenn, a Michelin-starred restaurant in San Francisco. The company has also achieved unicorn status, raising $608 million by April 2022.

What's Next?
Upside Foods is now focused on scaling up production at its Emeryville facility, which is designed for an initial capacity of 50,000 pounds per year, with plans to increase to over 400,000 pounds. The company is also exploring new product lines, including seafood, following its acquisition of Cultured Decadence in January 2022. As production capacity increases, Upside Foods aims to expand its market reach beyond chef-led sales to retail markets. The company's progress will likely influence regulatory frameworks and consumer acceptance of cultivated meat products, potentially leading to broader market penetration and a more sustainable food system.
