A new report by the FAIRR investor network indicates that the global livestock sector is significantly underestimating the financial risks associated with water insecurity. The report, titled 'The Hidden Costs of Water Scarcity in Livestock Companies,'
analyzes 18 of the world's largest publicly listed livestock companies, which collectively represent 20% of the global livestock market with revenues totaling $354 billion. FAIRR estimates that these companies face $6.4 billion in annual hidden costs from chronic water stress today, equivalent to 2% of their revenue on average. These costs include expenses for accessing alternative water sources and increased procurement costs for feed inputs and livestock supply. The research also highlights a substantial disclosure gap, with these companies reporting only 1% of their blue water use across the value chain, and five companies providing no information at all. The actual value chain water exposure is, on average, 132 times higher than reported.

The FAIRR report suggests that water resilience technologies, such as drip irrigation and water recycling, could generate between $14 billion and $20 billion in cumulative savings by 2050. However, these technologies alone would only reduce 9% of chronic water-stress costs once implementation expenses are considered. Therefore, a broader transformation in water management is required, including investments in nature-based solutions to enhance water retention in landscapes. Additionally, governance levers, such as subsidy reform, are needed to channel investment towards water resilience, and financial regulations must evolve to better integrate the costs and value of water into financial decision-making. Investors will likely increase pressure on companies for greater transparency and more robust strategies to address water risks, potentially influencing investment flows and corporate policies in the coming years.
