What's Happening?
Pratt & Whitney is in discussions with multiple weapons primes, including Raytheon, to conduct flight tests of its rotating detonation engine (RDE) technology. This follows successful ground evaluations conducted in 2025. The RDE technology offers a more
compact and efficient propulsion system, suitable for advanced missiles and effectors. The combustion process in an RDE occurs as a detonation wave, which is more efficient than the subsonic deflagration process used in current jet engines. Pratt & Whitney has been working with the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory and RTX Missiles & Defense to advance this technology, with plans to accelerate its development through additional internal investments.
