What's Happening?
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has announced that Toyotetsu Mid America (TTMA), an automotive parts supplier, will expand its operations in Owensboro with a $41 million investment. This expansion is projected to retain nearly 640 full-time jobs in Kentucky.
TTMA, which has been operating in Owensboro for 25 years, plans to upgrade its operational capacity and equipment, including investments in modern equipment and automation, to increase production. The project is expected to be completed by 2028. Governor Beshear highlighted this as part of the state's economic momentum, particularly within the manufacturing industry. Since the start of his administration, Governor Beshear has announced approximately 1,400 private-sector new-location and expansion projects, totaling over $54 billion in announced investments and creating around 71,000 jobs, marking the highest investment figure in the commonwealth's history.
Why It's Important?
This investment by Toyotetsu Mid America is significant for Kentucky's economy, particularly for the Owensboro community, as it secures nearly 640 existing jobs and reinforces the state's manufacturing sector. The continuous expansion of companies like TTMA, a Tier 1 supplier to Toyota, demonstrates confidence in Kentucky's business environment and workforce. The state's ability to attract and retain such substantial investments contributes to its economic stability and growth. Furthermore, the Governor's administration has overseen record-breaking economic development, including major projects that have positioned Kentucky as a leader in battery manufacturing. This trend of sustained investment and job creation helps to improve the overall economic well-being of Kentuckians, as evidenced by falling unemployment rates across all 120 counties and a record number of jobs filled.
What's Next?
The expansion project by Toyotetsu Mid America is slated for completion in 2028, during which time the company will be upgrading its facilities and integrating new equipment. To support this investment and job growth, the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority (KEDFA) has preliminarily approved an incentive agreement with TTMA under the Kentucky Reinvestment Act (KRA) program. This program allows the company to potentially retain a portion of the new tax revenue it generates by meeting annual targets, which can be claimed against its income tax liability and/or wage assessments. Additionally, TTMA will have access to resources from Kentucky’s workforce service providers, including no-cost recruitment, job placement services, and reduced-cost customized training and job-training incentives. These measures aim to ensure the successful implementation of the expansion and continued economic benefits for the region.
Beyond the Headlines
The ongoing success in attracting and retaining manufacturing investments, as exemplified by TTMA's expansion, points to a broader strategy by the Kentucky government to foster a robust economic environment. The emphasis on workforce development, including English language education opportunities for employees in collaboration with Owensboro Community & Technical College, highlights a commitment to inclusivity and skill enhancement. This not only benefits individual employees but also strengthens the local labor force, making the region more attractive for future investments. The state's focus on securing large-scale projects, such as those in the battery manufacturing sector, indicates a strategic pivot towards high-growth industries, aiming to diversify and future-proof Kentucky's economy. This long-term vision for economic development, coupled with community support initiatives like those by TTMA with Oasis Shelter and Habitat for Humanity, suggests a holistic approach to prosperity that extends beyond mere job creation.
