What's Happening?
A new AI tool called Creator Intelligence, launched by startup Plot and backed by Alexis Ohanian, is helping brands like Benefit Cosmetics identify and vet influencers. The tool brought to Benefit's attention Samara Boulter, known as @samaraispinkk, who
had organically featured Benefit's Cookie Highlighter in her 'get ready with me' (GRWM) content. Although Boulter did not tag the brand, her videos, which garnered over 32 million views in three months, prominently displayed the product. This discovery led Benefit to add Boulter to their gifting list and begin building a relationship with her, demonstrating how AI is enabling brands to uncover influential creators who are already organically promoting their products.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant for the U.S. marketing and advertising industry, as it showcases the transformative power of AI in influencer marketing. By using tools like Creator Intelligence, brands can move beyond traditional influencer outreach to identify authentic, organic mentions and endorsements. This approach can lead to more genuine brand-creator relationships and potentially higher engagement rates, as the creators are already naturally aligned with the product. For brands, it means a more efficient and data-driven way to discover new talent and optimize their marketing spend. For creators, it opens new avenues for partnership, even if they aren't actively seeking brand deals, by recognizing their organic influence. This shift could redefine how brands build their creator networks and measure the impact of their marketing campaigns.
What's Next?
The success of AI tools like Creator Intelligence in identifying organic brand mentions is likely to drive increased adoption across the U.S. marketing industry. More brands will likely invest in similar AI-powered platforms to enhance their influencer discovery and vetting processes. This could lead to a more data-centric approach to influencer marketing, where performance metrics and organic engagement become paramount. For creators, it means that their authentic content, even without direct brand tags, could become a pathway to partnerships. We can expect further innovation in AI tools that analyze content, sentiment, and audience demographics to provide even more granular insights for brands seeking to connect with relevant creators.
Beyond the Headlines
The use of AI to identify organic brand mentions by creators raises interesting ethical and cultural questions about authenticity and privacy in the digital space. While beneficial for brands, it blurs the lines between genuine user-generated content and potential marketing opportunities. Creators might become more conscious of what products they display, knowing they could be monitored by AI. This also highlights the increasing sophistication of data surveillance in marketing, where every piece of content can be analyzed for commercial potential. The long-term implications could include a shift in how creators approach their content, potentially leading to a more curated or even self-censored approach, as they become aware of the AI's watchful eye. It also underscores the growing value of organic influence in an era of sponsored content saturation.
