The European Union has approved a new method for storing captured carbon dioxide (CO2) from ships, marking a regulatory advancement for onboard carbon capture systems. The approval follows a successful test conducted by the Global Centre for Maritime
Decarbonisation (GCMD) on an 18,000 TEU Evergreen boxship. The test demonstrated a capture rate of 11% with a purity of 99.95%. The captured CO2 was processed into calcium carbonate, a stable compound with industrial uses. This method is now compliant with the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), providing a cost-effective solution for shipowners operating in European waters.
