What's Happening?
Quantum computing company IonQ has finalized its acquisition of SkyWater Technology, a U.S.-based semiconductor foundry, in a deal valued at approximately $1.8 billion. This acquisition was completed after receiving regulatory clearance, including the
early termination of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission's review process. The agreement, initially announced in January 2026, aims to establish a vertically integrated quantum platform company. As part of the transaction, SkyWater shareholders will receive $15.00 in cash and 0.4883 shares of IonQ common stock for each of their shares. SkyWater will continue to operate as a subsidiary under its existing name, with CEO Thomas Sonderman leading the subsidiary and reporting to IonQ's chairman and CEO, Niccolo de Masi. The acquisition allows SkyWater to maintain its operations in Minnesota, Florida, and Texas, and continue serving its existing markets in aerospace, defense, and commercial sectors while integrating IonQ's quantum technologies.
