Architects Kathy Hancox and Michael Kothke of HK Associates have transformed a midcentury home in Tucson, Arizona, originally designed by modernist Tom Gist. The house, known as Casa Luce, was reimagined to enhance its connection to the surrounding desert
landscape and improve its interior light and space. The architects removed central columns and replaced a low ceiling with a floating Douglas fir plane, creating a more open and serene environment. Skylights were added to bring natural light into the home, including a baffled skylight over the bedroom hallway that tracks the sun's movement. The redesign also involved removing visual obstructions and reconfiguring the floor plan to highlight the home's original design and the views of the Santa Rita Mountains.
