What's Happening?
The Green Book Alliance, a collaboration between BISG, BookNet Canada, and the U.K.'s Book Industry Communication, has launched the GBA Book Carbon Calculator. This tool is designed to help publishers and book industry organizations measure and understand
their carbon emissions. The web-based calculator, which has been in development for approximately six months, is available for free and does not require a subscription. It allows users to measure the carbon footprint of individual books, establish organizational baselines, and track sustainability progress over time. The tool is expected to be primarily used by those in production, manufacturing, and operations roles, although editors and publishers can also utilize it during planning stages to assess the environmental impact of production choices. The calculator reports emissions using standard greenhouse gas accounting metrics, specifically kilograms of CO₂ equivalent, rather than providing a sustainability score.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of the GBA Book Carbon Calculator is significant as it provides the publishing industry with a practical tool to address environmental concerns. By enabling publishers to measure and manage their carbon emissions, the tool supports the industry's move towards more sustainable practices. This initiative could lead to more informed production decisions, potentially reducing the environmental impact of book manufacturing. The tool's development and launch have been supported by several industry players, including New Society Publishers, ECW Press, Gibbs Smith, Publishing Scotland, and Friesens. The calculator's ability to provide detailed emissions data could inspire positive changes across the industry, encouraging publishers to adopt greener practices and contribute to global sustainability efforts.
What's Next?
To promote the use of the GBA Book Carbon Calculator, the Green Book Alliance will host a live demonstration webinar on June 30. This event will provide attendees with a comprehensive walkthrough of the tool, explaining its functionalities and benefits. Participants will have the opportunity to engage directly with the project team, ask questions, and gain insights into how the calculator can be integrated into their sustainability planning. The webinar aims to encourage widespread adoption of the tool across the publishing ecosystem, fostering a collective effort towards reducing the industry's carbon footprint.
