What's Happening?
The Cincinnati Art Museum is set to host its second annual holiday projection light show, 'CAM Nights & Holiday Lights,' featuring the artwork of Charley Harper. Titled 'Charley Harper’s Wild Wonderland,' the four-minute animated show will be projected
continuously on three outdoor walls in the Alice Bimel Courtyard from 5–8:45 p.m. on select Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, running from November 18, 2026, to January 8, 2027. This new, winter-themed show is produced by Lightborne, the same company behind the 'Harper Alive' show at Mercantile Immersive during BLINK 2026. Admission to both the light show and the museum is free. Visitors can also explore the exhibition 'The Art of Charley Harper: Creatures Wild and Tame,' the artist's first museum retrospective, which will remain open until 9 p.m. during these events. The event is organized in partnership with Charley Harper Art.
Why It's Important?
This event is significant for the Cincinnati community as it offers a free, accessible cultural experience during the holiday season, making art more approachable for a wider audience. The collaboration with Lightborne, known for its large-scale projection work, ensures a high-quality visual spectacle that could draw substantial local and regional tourism, boosting the local economy. Showcasing Charley Harper's work, a beloved artist, in an innovative format helps preserve and promote his legacy while introducing his art to new generations. The extended museum hours and the accompanying retrospective exhibition provide a comprehensive artistic experience, encouraging deeper engagement with art and supporting the museum's role as a cultural hub. This initiative also highlights the growing trend of integrating technology with traditional art forms to create immersive public art installations.
What's Next?
The 'Charley Harper’s Wild Wonderland' light show will run from November 18, 2026, to January 8, 2027, with specific dates excluding December 2, 18, 24, and 31. The Cincinnati Art Museum will be closed on November 26 and December 25. During the event, the museum and the 'The Art of Charley Harper: Creatures Wild and Tame' exhibition will remain open until 9 p.m. Visitors can also find unique gifts at the Museum Shop and participate in art-making activities at the Rosenthal Education Center (REC). The success of this year's event could influence future holiday programming and collaborations between the museum and technology-driven art producers, potentially leading to more innovative art presentations in the city.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'Charley Harper’s Wild Wonderland' event represents a broader trend in the art world where museums are increasingly leveraging digital projection and animation to create dynamic, engaging experiences that extend beyond traditional gallery spaces. This approach not only attracts new audiences, particularly those who might not typically visit museums, but also recontextualizes classic artworks in contemporary settings. By making the event free, the Cincinnati Art Museum reinforces its commitment to community engagement and accessibility, positioning itself as a public resource rather than an exclusive institution. This blend of art, technology, and community outreach could serve as a model for other cultural institutions seeking to innovate their programming and broaden their appeal, fostering a more inclusive and vibrant arts scene.
