What's Happening?
Vietjet has announced the launch of new international flight routes, significantly expanding its network and offering more travel options. Among the new services is a route from Hanoi to the Maldives, which will include a stop in Colombo, Sri Lanka. This
route is scheduled to commence on February 9, 2027, and will operate three round-trip flights per week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Additionally, Vietjet is introducing a new route connecting Da Nang, Vietnam, with Jakarta, Indonesia, set to launch on December 20, 2026, with four round-trip flights per week. To celebrate these new offerings, Vietjet is providing promotional Eco tickets starting from 0 VND (excluding taxes and fees) for travel between November 1, 2026, and October 31, 2027, across all its domestic and international routes.
Why It's Important?
This expansion by Vietjet is significant for regional tourism and economic connectivity. The new Hanoi-Maldives route via Colombo will make these popular tourist destinations more accessible, potentially boosting visitor numbers to Sri Lanka and the Maldives. For Colombo, the stopover offers travelers an opportunity to explore Sri Lanka's cultural heritage, which could stimulate local tourism and related industries. The Da Nang-Jakarta route further strengthens ties between Vietnam and Indonesia, facilitating business and leisure travel between two growing Southeast Asian economies. By offering affordable travel options, Vietjet aims to democratize air travel, making international destinations more attainable for a wider range of travelers, thereby supporting the tourism sectors in these countries and fostering cultural exchange.
What's Next?
The introduction of these new routes is part of Vietjet's ongoing strategy to continuously expand its international flight network. The airline aims to provide more convenient and affordable travel options between Vietnam and major tourist, cultural, and economic centers globally. Passengers on these new flights can expect to experience Vietjet's in-flight services, including Vietnamese and international cuisine and unique cultural and artistic programs. The promotional ticket offers are designed to stimulate early bookings and encourage travel on these new routes. As these routes become operational, Vietjet will likely monitor their performance to assess demand and potentially introduce further expansions or adjustments to its flight schedule, continuing its growth as a key player in the regional aviation market.
Beyond the Headlines
Vietjet's strategic expansion reflects a broader trend in the aviation industry where airlines are increasingly focusing on connecting emerging markets and popular tourist destinations. By establishing routes that include stopovers in culturally rich cities like Colombo, airlines can cater to diverse traveler interests, offering multi-destination itineraries. This approach not only maximizes aircraft utilization but also taps into different segments of the travel market, from leisure tourists seeking island getaways to those interested in cultural exploration. The competitive pricing strategy, exemplified by the 0 VND tickets, indicates an aggressive push to capture market share and stimulate demand, which can lead to increased competition among airlines and potentially more affordable travel options for consumers across the region. This expansion also underscores the growing economic and tourism ties within Asia and between Asia and other global destinations.
