What's Happening?
The Charlotte Hornets have announced a new multi-year broadcast agreement with Radio One's Sports Radio 92.7 WFNZ-FM, solidifying WFNZ as the team's flagship radio station. This extension continues a partnership that has been in place since 2008. Under
the terms of the deal, WFNZ-FM will broadcast all Hornets preseason, regular-season, and postseason games. The coverage will include a 60-minute pre-game show hosted by Kyle Bailey and Travis Hancock, and a 30-minute post-game show featuring Will Palaszczuk, play-by-play voice Sam Farber, additional station talent, and Hornets radio producer Rob Longo. Furthermore, the agreement provides for weekly appearances by head coach Charles Lee and regular appearances by other team personnel. Additional Hornets content will also be featured on co-owned stations Adult R&B '105.3 R&B' WOSF and News/Talk 107.9 WBT-FM. This move is part of the Hornets' 'Fans First' philosophy, aiming to provide more ways for fans to engage with the team.
Why It's Important?
This extended partnership is significant for both the Charlotte Hornets and their fanbase, as it ensures consistent and comprehensive radio coverage for NBA basketball in the Charlotte region. For the Hornets, maintaining a strong local media presence is crucial for fan engagement, brand visibility, and community connection. The 'Fans First' philosophy highlighted by Hornets President of Business Operations Shelly Cayette-Weston underscores the team's commitment to accessibility for its supporters. For WFNZ, securing the flagship radio rights for a major professional sports team like the Hornets reinforces its position as a leading sports content provider in the market. This agreement allows WFNZ to deliver exclusive interviews, special programming, and fan experiences, which are vital for attracting and retaining listeners. The inclusion of pre-game and post-game shows, along with regular appearances from team staff, offers in-depth analysis and insider perspectives that cater to dedicated fans, potentially boosting listenership and advertising revenue for the station.
What's Next?
Following this multi-year agreement, fans can expect uninterrupted radio coverage of the Charlotte Hornets' upcoming seasons, starting with the 2026-27 season. The expanded content across WFNZ-FM and its sister stations, WOSF and WBT-FM, will provide a broader platform for Hornets-related discussions and updates. The team will likely leverage this partnership to further promote its players, coaching staff, and community initiatives. From a broadcast perspective, WFNZ will continue to develop its programming around the Hornets, potentially introducing new segments or interactive fan experiences. The consistent media presence is expected to support the team's efforts to build momentum and connect with its audience, especially as the team aims to improve its performance on the court. The focus on team chemistry, as noted by power forward Grant Williams, suggests a concerted effort to foster a positive environment that could resonate with fans through the radio broadcasts.
Beyond the Headlines
The renewal of this long-standing partnership between the Charlotte Hornets and WFNZ highlights the enduring importance of traditional media, specifically local radio, in the digital age of sports consumption. While streaming and digital platforms offer new ways to follow sports, local radio stations like WFNZ continue to play a critical role in fostering community identity and providing accessible, real-time coverage for fans who may not always have access to television broadcasts. This agreement also reflects a strategic decision by the Hornets to invest in local engagement, recognizing that a strong connection with the regional fanbase is fundamental to the team's long-term success and cultural relevance. The emphasis on 'conversations surrounding the team' suggests that the partnership extends beyond just game broadcasts, aiming to create a continuous dialogue and sense of belonging among Hornets supporters, which is vital for building a loyal and passionate following.
