What's Happening?
Amazon advertisers can now target display and video ads to Amazon users who also shop at other retailers, including Walmart, Dollar General, Kroger, and Sephora. This new capability is made possible through an integration between data firm Attain and Amazon's
ad buying tool, Amazon Ads DVA+. Attain's network, which comprises 15 million consumers who have opted in to share their purchase data from rewards programs like Frisbee and Merryfield, and the financial management platform Klover, provides visibility into shopping behavior across tens of thousands of merchants. This allows advertisers to build audience segments based on purchase behavior outside of Amazon and activate these segments across Amazon's inventory, including Prime Video and third-party inventory.
Why It's Important?
This development significantly enhances the targeting capabilities for advertisers on Amazon, impacting the U.S. e-commerce and advertising industries. Previously, retail media networks were limited to their own data, making it challenging to create comprehensive customer profiles. With Attain's integration, brands can now reach Amazon users with more relevant ads, even if their primary purchase behavior for certain categories occurs elsewhere. This allows for more precise and effective advertising campaigns, potentially increasing return on investment for advertisers. For Amazon, this partnership strengthens its advertising platform by offering a more sophisticated targeting solution, attracting more brands and advertising spend. It also intensifies competition among retail media networks by providing a broader data scope.
What's Next?
Advertisers are expected to leverage this new capability to refine their targeting strategies on Amazon, creating more personalized ad experiences for consumers. Companies like Chipotle could target Amazon customers who frequent competing restaurant chains, while CPG brands could reach consumers who shop at other grocery or general merchandise stores. This integration is likely to lead to more cross-retailer targeting efforts, pushing the boundaries of retail media. Amazon may explore further partnerships with data providers to expand its audience targeting capabilities, while other retail media networks might seek similar integrations to remain competitive. The ethical implications of using aggregated purchase data for advertising will also remain a topic of discussion.
Beyond the Headlines
This integration represents a significant step towards a more interconnected and data-driven advertising ecosystem. It blurs the lines between different retail platforms, allowing advertisers to gain a holistic view of consumer behavior beyond a single marketplace. The use of opted-in consumer data from rewards programs highlights a growing trend in data collection, where consumers voluntarily share their information in exchange for benefits. This raises deeper questions about data privacy, consumer consent, and the future of personalized advertising. The ability to target shoppers based on their behavior across multiple retailers could lead to more sophisticated and potentially intrusive advertising, prompting further regulatory scrutiny and industry discussions on data ethics.
