What's Happening?
Taylor’s Wave, a new whitewater feature on the French Broad River in Woodfin, North Carolina, has officially opened, culminating a decade-long effort. The project was spearheaded by Marc Hunt and Cat Potts in memory of their son, Taylor, an accomplished
kayaker who passed away in 2015. The vision for a world-class whitewater wave near Asheville, initially Marc Hunt's dream, transformed into a tribute to Taylor's life and his passion for kayaking. The feature, designed by Scott Shipley of S2O Design and Engineering, offers versatility for paddlers of all skill levels, transforming into a dynamic wave-hole combination at higher flows for experienced kayakers and a more forgiving wave at lower flows for beginners. The grand opening, held on October 22, brought together community members, paddlers, and local leaders to celebrate the realization of this significant project, which also includes plans for a surrounding park and greenway.
Why It's Important?
The opening of Taylor’s Wave represents a significant development for the whitewater sports community in the United States, particularly in the Asheville area. This new feature is poised to become a premier freestyle kayaking destination, attracting both local enthusiasts and potentially national and international competitions. The versatility of the wave, accommodating various skill levels, fosters inclusivity and provides opportunities for new generations to engage with the sport. Beyond recreation, the project is expected to contribute to local economic development by drawing tourism and supporting related businesses. The accompanying park and greenway will enhance public access to the French Broad River, promoting health, wellness, and environmental stewardship. This initiative demonstrates the power of community-driven projects to create lasting legacies and transform local landscapes into vibrant recreational hubs.
What's Next?
With Taylor’s Wave now open, the focus will shift to the completion of the surrounding park and greenway, which will connect the wave to the heart of Asheville, creating a new recreational corridor. The developers anticipate the wave will host monthly local freestyle and rodeo events, as well as national and international competitions, further solidifying its status as a world-class facility. There is also a strong emphasis on establishing instructional programs for youth and fostering club use, aiming to cultivate the next generation of kayakers. The community response has been overwhelmingly positive, and as higher river flows occur, the full potential of the wave is expected to be realized. The project aims to become a social hub for the kayaking community and a significant attraction for daily spectators, contributing to the region's health, wellness, and economic vitality.
Beyond the Headlines
Taylor’s Wave transcends its function as a recreational facility, embodying a profound narrative of resilience, community spirit, and the transformative power of grief. Born from a personal tragedy, the project became a collective endeavor to honor a life and create a lasting positive impact. This initiative highlights how individual passion, when coupled with community support and perseverance, can overcome significant challenges, including financial hurdles, opposition, and natural disasters like Hurricane Helene. The wave serves as a testament to the idea that even in the face of loss, meaningful contributions can be made that benefit a wider community. It also underscores the intrinsic value of outdoor recreation in fostering social connections, promoting mental well-being, and driving local development, demonstrating how a single project can weave together personal legacy, environmental enhancement, and economic growth.
