What's Happening?
Maui Gold, a century-old pineapple company in Hawaii, is celebrating Pineapple Week starting June 22. Under the management of Todd Domeck, the company is focusing on sustainability and zero waste by utilizing a value-added processing facility. This facility allows
them to produce dehydrated, fresh-cut, and frozen pineapple products, as well as juice, from fruit that would otherwise be discarded. During Pineapple Week, Maui Gold is hosting pop-up events with vendors and will distribute pineapples to the community on International Pineapple Day, June 27. The company aims to keep 90% of its produce within Hawaii, supporting local agriculture.
Why It's Important?
Maui Gold's initiatives highlight the importance of sustainable agricultural practices and local food production. By reducing waste and creating new products, the company not only enhances its business model but also contributes to environmental conservation. The focus on keeping produce within Hawaii supports the local economy and reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation. These efforts align with broader trends in the food industry towards sustainability and local sourcing. The community engagement during Pineapple Week also strengthens consumer relationships and promotes awareness of sustainable practices.
