What's Happening?
Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP has announced the addition of William Nicholson as a partner in its Energy & Infrastructure practice, based in New York. Nicholson joins Orrick from Kirkland & Ellis, bringing extensive experience in advising sponsors,
investors, and lenders on project finance, energy investments, and infrastructure transactions. This move marks the 25th partner addition to Orrick’s global Energy & Infrastructure platform since January 2025, and the 12th partner hire in New York during the same period. Nicholson's practice focuses on the financing and development of various energy and infrastructure assets, including renewable power and conventional power generation. His expertise covers project development and finance, investment transactions, tax equity arrangements, and the acquisition and disposition of energy-related assets. He also has in-house experience from a secondment at Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, an investment firm specializing in energy infrastructure.
Why It's Important?
This strategic hire significantly strengthens Orrick’s capabilities in the rapidly evolving energy and infrastructure sectors, particularly in sophisticated energy financing structures. The firm's continued investment in this practice area reflects the growing demand for legal expertise in energy transition, power generation, and major infrastructure development. Nicholson's background, including his in-house experience, provides a valuable perspective on the investment and operational considerations that influence project financing decisions. This addition enhances Orrick's ability to advise clients on complex domestic and international infrastructure transactions, which often involve intricate arrangements among developers, investors, lenders, and other stakeholders. The firm's expansion in this area positions it to better serve clients navigating substantial investments required for power generation, grid infrastructure, and energy development projects, reinforcing its standing in a competitive legal market.
What's Next?
The integration of William Nicholson into Orrick's Energy & Infrastructure team is expected to immediately bolster the firm's capacity to handle complex project-level financings and tax equity investments across both renewable and conventional energy markets. This expansion suggests Orrick will continue to pursue growth in key strategic areas, likely attracting more high-profile energy and infrastructure projects. The firm's ongoing recruitment of experienced attorneys in this sector indicates a sustained focus on becoming a leading advisor in energy transition and infrastructure development. Clients in these sectors can anticipate enhanced legal services and deeper expertise from Orrick, particularly in navigating the intricate financial and regulatory landscapes of large-scale energy projects. This move may also prompt other law firms to further invest in their energy and infrastructure practices to remain competitive.
Beyond the Headlines
Orrick's consistent expansion of its Energy & Infrastructure practice, highlighted by this latest hire, underscores a broader trend in the legal industry: the increasing specialization and demand for expertise in sustainable and critical infrastructure development. As the U.S. and global economies shift towards renewable energy and modernize existing infrastructure, law firms capable of navigating complex financing, regulatory, and transactional challenges will gain a significant competitive advantage. This focus also reflects the growing importance of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors in investment decisions, driving demand for legal counsel that understands both traditional and innovative financing mechanisms for green projects. The firm's strategy positions it at the forefront of legal services for the energy transition, indicating a long-term commitment to a sector that is crucial for future economic growth and environmental sustainability.
