Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh is bidding farewell to its Agave americana, commonly known as the century plant, which has been a part of its desert greenhouse for over 50 years. This summer, the plant experienced a rare triple-bloom alongside other
agave species, marking the first and last bloom of its lifetime. As a monocarpic species, the century plant blooms once before dying. The bloom has grown so large that the conservatory had to remove part of the greenhouse roof to accommodate its height. On July 24, Phipps hosted a farewell celebration for the plant, which included educational sessions, agave drinks, and free succulents for visitors. Thousands have visited to witness the bloom, which has become a significant attraction at the conservatory.
