What's Happening?
The fourth edition of the 'Creature Oscure - Gothic Festival' is scheduled to take place in Rome from November 19 to November 22, 2026. Organized by CRUSH Collettiva, led by socio-cultural anthropologist Eleonora D’Agostino and illustrator Matteo Gabos,
the festival aims to immerse Rome in a 'disturbing' atmosphere through various artistic and cultural expressions, including art, dissemination, publishing, comics, and cinema. The central theme for this year's festival is 'rituals and occult knowledge,' chosen in response to a recent resurgence of interest in occult practices and worldviews, as well as a tribute to the late historian Carlo Ginzburg, known for his research on witches and divergent personalities. The event will feature several dedicated areas: 'Naturalia Occulta' for art and collecting, 'Dark Market' for exhibitors, 'Black Gathering' for discussions and performances, and 'Grim Games' for board and role-playing games.
Why It's Important?
The 'Creature Oscure - Gothic Festival' serves as a significant cultural event that explores the gothic and horror genres through an academic and artistic lens. By focusing on 'rituals and occult knowledge,' the festival taps into a growing societal interest in esoteric themes, which can reflect broader anxieties or fascinations within contemporary culture. The tribute to Carlo Ginzburg highlights the festival's commitment to intellectual depth, connecting modern interpretations of the gothic with historical research on witchcraft and societal deviance. This event provides a platform for artists, writers, and researchers to engage in constructive dialogue about hidden aspects of the natural world and cultural niches, fostering a deeper understanding of these often-misunderstood subjects. The festival's diverse offerings, from art exhibitions to live music and workshops, contribute to Rome's vibrant cultural scene and attract a specialized audience interested in alternative and dark aesthetics.

Beyond the Headlines
The festival's exploration of 'rituals and occult knowledge' goes beyond mere entertainment, delving into the psychological and sociological aspects of belief systems. The organizers' intention to address 'witch hunts' and the public discourse surrounding figures like Jeffrey Epstein suggests a critical engagement with how society perceives and reacts to perceived 'deviance' or hidden power structures. This critical perspective can encourage attendees to reflect on historical and contemporary forms of social control and moral panics. The inclusion of diverse artistic forms, from black metal to medieval pagan folk music, alongside academic discussions, creates a unique interdisciplinary space. This blend allows for both intellectual inquiry and visceral experience, fostering a holistic understanding of the gothic as a cultural phenomenon that encompasses both the sublime and the unsettling.
