What's Happening?
Lionsgate has announced the initial tour dates for the world premiere stage play adaptation of Freida McFadden's novel, 'The Housemaid.' Tony Award nominee Bekah Brunstetter is set to write the play, with Olivier Award nominee Matthew Dunster directing.
The production is scheduled to open at London’s Richmond Theatre on September 14, 2027, and will tour throughout the United Kingdom, concluding its run on April 29, 2028. There is currently no information regarding a potential U.S. tour for the play. This announcement follows the December 2025 release of the book's movie adaptation, which starred Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney. A sequel film, based on McFadden's 'The Housemaid's Secret,' is also in production and slated to premiere on December 17, 2027. Jenefer Brown, Lionsgate’s president of Global Products & Experiences, noted that the momentum behind 'The Housemaid' franchise continues to grow with both the stage play and sequel film underway.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of 'The Housemaid' into a stage play, alongside its successful film adaptation and upcoming sequel, highlights a growing trend in the entertainment industry: leveraging popular literary works across multiple media platforms. This strategy allows intellectual property to reach broader audiences and generate diverse revenue streams. For Lionsgate, this multi-platform approach maximizes the commercial potential of the franchise, appealing to both existing fans of the book and new audiences drawn in by the film or stage production. The success of such adaptations can influence future investment decisions in similar projects, potentially leading to more books being adapted for both screen and stage. While the initial tour is confined to the UK, the potential for a U.S. run could significantly impact the American theater scene, bringing a popular psychological thriller to live audiences and potentially attracting new demographics to theatrical productions.
What's Next?
The immediate next step for 'The Housemaid' stage play is its premiere in London in September 2027, followed by its UK tour. Industry observers will be watching the critical and commercial reception of the play to gauge its potential for international expansion, particularly to the U.S. The success of the stage production could influence Lionsgate's decision to bring it across the Atlantic, potentially leading to Broadway or national tours in America. Concurrently, the sequel film, 'The Housemaid's Secret,' is set to premiere in December 2027, which will further expand the franchise's presence. The performance of both the play and the sequel will likely inform future strategic decisions for the franchise, including potential further adaptations or spin-offs, and could set a precedent for how Lionsgate develops its intellectual properties.
Beyond the Headlines
The multi-platform development of 'The Housemaid' franchise reflects a broader shift in how entertainment companies approach content creation and distribution. By adapting a popular novel into both film and stage productions, Lionsgate is capitalizing on different audience preferences and consumption habits. This strategy not only diversifies revenue but also creates a more immersive and expansive universe for fans. The psychological thriller genre, which has proven successful in literature and film, is now being tested on stage, offering a unique challenge and opportunity for theatrical storytelling. This trend could lead to more cross-pollination between literary, cinematic, and theatrical worlds, blurring traditional boundaries and fostering innovative adaptations that cater to a wider range of artistic expressions and audience engagement.
