What's Happening?
Amentum, a global leader in advanced engineering and technology solutions, has officially opened its Global Nuclear headquarters in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. This new facility, which also houses Amentum’s Nuclear Center of Excellence, will serve as a central
hub for the company's international nuclear business operations. Located at 151 Lafayette Drive, the headquarters employs over 150 subject-matter experts focused on delivering innovative engineering, technology solutions, and advanced energy capabilities. This move deepens Amentum's presence in east Tennessee, where it already leads the United Cleanup Oak Ridge (UCOR) partnership, the U.S. Department of Energy’s prime environmental management contractor for the Oak Ridge Reservation. Mark Whitney, president of Amentum’s Energy & Environment division, stated that centralizing global nuclear operations in Oak Ridge leverages strong local partnerships to increase energy capacity across the U.S. The opening was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by CEO John Heller, U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN-03), and local leaders.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of Amentum's Global Nuclear headquarters in Oak Ridge is a significant development for the U.S. nuclear industry and regional economic growth. By centralizing its international nuclear operations, Amentum aims to enhance its ability to deliver advanced energy solutions, which is crucial for meeting the growing electricity demands of American businesses and citizens. This initiative is expected to foster innovation in next-generation nuclear technology and build upon the operational foundation Amentum has already established in the region through its UCOR partnership. Furthermore, the company simultaneously launched the Amentum Nuclear Scholars Program, a five-year, $500,000 investment to create a scholarship pipeline between Roane State Community College and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. This program addresses the rapidly expanding need for professional and technical labor in the nuclear industry, ensuring a skilled workforce for future advancements and contributing to the economic vitality of the community.
What's Next?
The Amentum Nuclear Scholars Program is set to launch its first student cohort in the U.S. in late 2026, with integration into Amentum’s international academic partnerships planned for the fall of 2027. This educational pipeline aims to provide students with the necessary foundation and practical internship experiences to excel in the nuclear industry, preparing them for high-demand roles. The ongoing collaboration between Amentum, Roane State Community College, and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, will continue to develop curriculum and provide financial support to students, ensuring a steady supply of talent for the world's growing nuclear energy demands. The new headquarters will also continue to drive innovation and expand Amentum's capabilities in advanced engineering and energy solutions, potentially leading to further advancements in nuclear technology and increased energy capacity for the U.S.
