What's Happening?
Minnesota Timberwolves fans in the Rochester area will have access to 15 games free over the air this season, thanks to a new agreement between Gray Media, TEGNA, and DAZN. The games will primarily be broadcast on the North Star Sports & Entertainment
Network, available on digital channel KXLT 47.2 in Rochester. Some select games may also air on Gray Media’s primary network affiliates. This partnership aims to deliver premium live sports directly to local fans without requiring a paid subscription. The schedule includes nine home games at the Target Center, with the first broadcast set for October 28 against the Golden State Warriors. Viewers are advised to check local listings for specific channel assignments and any schedule changes. All Timberwolves games, excluding those subject to national blackouts, will also be available through the DAZN app or DAZN.com/Timberwolves.
Why It's Important?
This agreement is significant for local sports broadcasting and fan accessibility in the U.S. It expands the reach of professional basketball, making games available to a broader audience who might not subscribe to cable or streaming services that typically carry NBA games. For Gray Media, TEGNA, and DAZN, this partnership represents a strategic move to increase viewership and engagement within the Minnesota and Wisconsin markets, as stated by Gray Media Chief Operating Officer Sandy Breland. By offering games free over-the-air, the collaboration could attract new fans and strengthen the team's local following, potentially boosting local advertising revenue for the broadcasters. This initiative also highlights a growing trend in sports media to diversify distribution channels, balancing traditional broadcast with digital platforms to cater to evolving consumer habits.
What's Next?
Following the commencement of broadcasts on October 28, the success of this partnership will likely be evaluated based on viewership numbers and fan engagement in the Rochester area and across Gray stations in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The agreement could serve as a model for similar local broadcasting deals for other NBA teams or professional sports leagues in the U.S., particularly in markets where regional sports networks face challenges. Broadcasters will monitor the impact on their primary network affiliates and the DAZN app, assessing how free over-the-air access influences overall subscription rates and digital viewership. Future negotiations for sports broadcasting rights may increasingly consider hybrid models that combine traditional and digital distribution to maximize audience reach and revenue streams.
Beyond the Headlines
This development reflects a broader shift in the sports media landscape, where content providers are experimenting with various distribution strategies to combat declining traditional cable subscriptions and capitalize on the growing digital audience. The move to offer games free over-the-air addresses the issue of sports accessibility, ensuring that local fans, regardless of their subscription status, can follow their team. This could foster a stronger sense of community around the Minnesota Timberwolves and potentially increase local attendance at games. Furthermore, it underscores the value of local broadcast affiliates in an increasingly fragmented media environment, demonstrating their continued relevance in delivering high-demand live content like professional sports. The partnership also highlights the evolving role of streaming services like DAZN, which are now exploring collaborations with traditional broadcasters to expand their reach.
