What's Happening?
Thalia Hall in Chicago recently hosted its first annual 'Embodied' variety show, organized by Brave Space Alliance. The event celebrated Juneteenth and Pride, focusing on trans Black artistry. The show featured a diverse lineup of performances, highlighting
the intersection of Black and LGBTQ+ cultures. This inaugural event aimed to provide a platform for marginalized voices and foster a sense of community and pride among attendees.
Why It's Important?
The 'Embodied' variety show is a significant cultural event as it celebrates both Juneteenth and Pride, two important observances in the U.S. Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery, while Pride celebrates LGBTQ+ rights and visibility. By combining these celebrations, the event highlights the intersectionality of race and sexual orientation, promoting inclusivity and diversity. It also provides a platform for trans Black artists, who often face multiple layers of discrimination, to showcase their talents and stories.
