What's Happening?
Scandium International Mining Corp. has initiated an update of its Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) for the Nyngan Scandium Project in New South Wales, Australia. The update, conducted by Lycopodium Limited, aims to reflect capital and operational efficiencies
and align with customer requirements. The project, which received a mining license in October 2025, is designed to be a small surface mining operation with a 20-year mine life. It plans to produce approximately 38,500 kg of scandium oxide annually. The update will not alter the project's basic parameters but will focus on cost efficiencies and high-grade potential.
Why It's Important?
The update of the DFS is a critical step towards the development and eventual production of the Nyngan Scandium Project. Scandium is a strategic mineral with applications in semiconductors, solid-state batteries, and defense. The project aims to provide a reliable supply of scandium outside of China and Russia, contributing to the Western world's efforts to establish robust critical mineral supply chains. The successful development of this project could enhance the availability of scandium for emerging technologies and reduce dependency on limited global sources.
What's Next?
With the DFS update underway, Scandium International Mining is poised to advance towards construction and production phases. The company is fully funded for the DFS update, marking a significant milestone in the project's timeline. As the project progresses, stakeholders will likely focus on securing partnerships and offtake agreements to ensure market access for scandium products. The project's success could influence future investments in scandium mining and processing, potentially expanding its applications in various industries.
