What's Happening?
Easterly Clear Ocean (ECO), a maritime investment platform and strategic partner of Easterly Asset Management, has announced the successful exit of all vessels in its inaugural investment fund, ECO Tranche I. The fund, which was established in 2021, has achieved
an estimated 63% net Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and a 4.25x net multiple at close. Since its inception, the fund has delivered a 297% Distributed to Paid-In Capital (DPI) to investors, marking the highest DPI among 2021 vintage buyout funds. The fund closed in March 2022 with the acquisition of seven chemical tankers and completed the sale of the remaining fleet in June 2026. ECO's strategy focuses on disciplined asset selection, operational oversight, and well-timed exits to generate income and capital appreciation.
Why It's Important?
The successful exit of ECO Tranche I highlights the potential of maritime assets as a lucrative investment class, especially in an environment where traditional markets face extended exit timelines and uneven liquidity. This achievement underscores the importance of strategic asset management and operational control in generating high returns. For investors, the results demonstrate the viability of investing in non-traditional asset classes that are uncorrelated to standard market fluctuations. The success of ECO's strategy could encourage more investors to consider maritime assets, potentially leading to increased capital flow into this sector.
What's Next?
Building on the success of Tranche I, Easterly Clear Ocean is currently raising capital for its latest fund, ECO Fleet Holdings V LP (ECO V), which launched in August 2025. The company has begun deploying capital into five vessels, including dry bulk carriers and stainless chemical tankers. This new portfolio reflects a strategic rotation into newer, more modern vessels acquired at favorable valuations. ECO aims to continue its strategy of profitably acquiring, operating, and exiting assets to generate ongoing income and capital appreciation.
