What's Happening?
Ambassador Jamieson Greer, the U.S. Trade Representative, has issued a statement welcoming the release of new critical minerals pricing benchmarks by S&P Global. This initiative is seen as a significant step towards promoting transparent, market-based
pricing for critical minerals such as Gallium, Germanium, Tungsten, Antimony, and Neodymium and Praseodymium. Greer emphasized that these benchmarks will aid in resilient decision-making and complement the Trump Administration's efforts to build supply chain resilience. The benchmarks are expected to inform the negotiation of the Agreement on Trade in Critical Minerals, which aims to establish phased-in mineral-specific price floors and common standards among trading partners.
Why It's Important?
The release of these pricing benchmarks is crucial for enhancing transparency and stability in the global market for critical minerals. Such transparency is expected to encourage private-sector investment and strengthen secure and resilient supply chains. The move addresses the instability caused by non-market policies and practices that have previously distorted global mineral prices. By establishing border-adjusted price floors, the initiative aims to correct market distortions and accelerate supply chain resilience, which is vital for industries reliant on these minerals.
What's Next?
Negotiations for the Agreement on Trade in Critical Minerals will continue, building on engagements with G7 Finance and Trade Ministers and action plans with Japan, Mexico, and the European Union. The U.S. will seek constructive engagement with trading partners to establish transparent and resilient markets for critical minerals. The proposed agreement reflects insights from nearly 2,500 comments submitted in response to a Federal Register Notice earlier this year.
