What's Happening?
Westmoreland County commissioners have allocated $25,000 to the county's airport authority to fund an advertising campaign. This campaign is designed to promote the upcoming launch of Breeze Airways service at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport. The funding
originates from the county's 5% hotel tax revenue, which is managed by Laurel Highlands Tourism. Breeze Airways announced last week that it will commence service in February, offering two weekly flights to Myrtle Beach, S.C., and two weekly flights to Orlando, Fla., starting in late May. This new service will fill a void left by Spirit Airlines, which ceased commercial operations at the airport in May after serving as the sole commercial carrier since 2011. The advertising efforts will replace previous Spirit Airlines branding with Breeze Airways information and updated route details, targeting potential customers in Western Pennsylvania and Ohio.
Why It's Important?
The advertising campaign is crucial for ensuring the success and sustainability of Breeze Airways' new service at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport. The county commissioners emphasized the importance of promoting the airline to encourage local usage, stating that if the service is not utilized, it could be lost. This initiative aims to boost passenger numbers and demonstrate the viability of commercial air travel from the region. The return of a commercial airline is significant for Westmoreland County, as it enhances connectivity for residents and supports local tourism by making the area more accessible. The investment of hotel tax funds into this campaign highlights a strategic effort to leverage tourism revenue for economic development and improved infrastructure, particularly as the airport is also undergoing a $22 million terminal expansion project.
What's Next?
The advertising campaign is expected to launch soon, ahead of Breeze Airways' service commencement in February. Laurel Highlands Tourism Executive Director Ann Nemanic indicated that the campaign is anticipated to expand further in 2027 and 2028, with ongoing adjustments based on the initial success of the flights. The new passenger terminal, currently under construction, is slated to open within weeks, and a second passenger gate will be installed next year, potentially allowing for additional flights and commercial airlines. The Westmoreland County Airport Authority secured over $1.3 million in government subsidies, including an $850,000 federal grant and $500,000 in state funding, to attract Breeze Airways. The airport authority's two-year deal with Breeze Airways was approved last week, though details of the contract remain undisclosed pending a Right-to-Know Law request.
Beyond the Headlines
This development underscores the competitive nature of regional air travel and the proactive measures local governments take to secure and maintain commercial flight services. The use of hotel tax funds for an advertising campaign demonstrates a direct link between tourism revenue and infrastructure support, aiming to create a self-reinforcing cycle of economic growth. The controversy surrounding the undisclosed details of the contract between the airport authority and Breeze Airways highlights ongoing transparency issues in public-private partnerships, raising questions about accountability and public access to information regarding significant financial agreements. The success of this campaign and the new airline service could serve as a model for other regional airports struggling to attract or retain commercial carriers, emphasizing the importance of strategic marketing and financial incentives.
