What's Happening?
Audemars Piguet has introduced 'The Watch Keepers,' a new digital platform designed for the buying and selling of its certified pre-owned (CPO) timepieces. Initially rolled out in Europe and Switzerland, the platform is slated for a progressive global
expansion. It will feature approximately 100 authenticated CPO watches at any given time, each undergoing a rigorous authentication process by Audemars Piguet's in-house team. Both buyers and sellers must complete an initial registration. Sellers are required to provide the watch's serial number and proof of ownership, with eligibility limited to watches that are at least 24 months old since their initial retail purchase. Once verified, the watch is shipped to Audemars Piguet's Customer Service facilities for examination by watchmakers, who assess its aesthetic condition using a five-point grading system. After certification, the watch is photographed and listed, with sellers having the option to set a price or use an auction format. The timepiece remains with Audemars Piguet until the sale is finalized, after which it is delivered to the buyer with a branded travel pouch, certificate of authenticity, and a two-year warranty.
Why It's Important?
This initiative by Audemars Piguet signifies a strategic move into the burgeoning secondary market for luxury watches, following similar programs launched by other high-end watchmakers like Rolex, Vacheron Constantin, and Richard Mille. By establishing its own CPO platform, Audemars Piguet aims to exert greater control over the resale market for its timepieces, ensuring authenticity and maintaining brand integrity. This direct-to-consumer approach for pre-owned sales allows the company to capture resale margins, unlike Rolex, which primarily works through authorized dealers. The program also enhances customer loyalty by providing a secure and transparent marketplace for collectors, potentially attracting new enthusiasts to the brand. The success of Rolex's CPO program, which is projected to exceed $1 billion in sales by 2027, underscores the significant financial potential and strategic importance of this market segment for luxury watch manufacturers.
What's Next?
The 'The Watch Keepers' platform is expected to expand progressively across various regions worldwide, making certified pre-owned Audemars Piguet watches more accessible to a broader international clientele. The company will likely monitor the platform's performance in its initial European and Swiss markets to refine its operations and user experience before wider deployment. As the program grows, Audemars Piguet may introduce additional features or services to enhance the buying and selling process, potentially leveraging digital avatars of its team members to guide users, as already implemented. The success of this direct CPO model could influence other luxury brands to adopt similar strategies, further consolidating manufacturers' control over the secondary market and potentially impacting the landscape for independent watch dealers and resellers. The program's expansion will also provide more data on the long-term value retention of Audemars Piguet timepieces in a controlled, authenticated environment.
Beyond the Headlines
Audemars Piguet's entry into the certified pre-owned market reflects a broader trend in the luxury sector where brands are increasingly seeking to manage their products' lifecycle beyond the initial sale. This move addresses concerns about counterfeiting and unauthorized resales, which can dilute brand value and erode consumer trust. By offering a manufacturer-backed certification and warranty, Audemars Piguet provides peace of mind to buyers and sellers, fostering a more transparent and trustworthy secondary market. Ethically, this approach promotes sustainability by extending the lifespan of luxury goods and encouraging a circular economy within the high-end watch industry. Legally, it allows the brand to enforce quality standards and intellectual property rights more effectively in the resale space. Culturally, it reinforces the idea of luxury watches as enduring assets with lasting value, rather than mere disposable commodities, appealing to a growing consumer base that values authenticity, provenance, and responsible consumption.
