What's Happening?
The Morgan State men's and women's cross country teams are set to compete in the 2026 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Cross Country Championships on Friday, October 30, at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. The Bears are entering the championship
following a strong showing at the Joe Handelman '52 Fall Classic. Key runners for Morgan State include Crystal Coke for the women's team and Natnael Gebremariam for the men's team, both of whom have consistently led their respective squads throughout the season. The championship will feature all eight MEAC men's and women's cross country programs, with the men's 8k race starting at 11 a.m. and the women's 5k race at noon. The entire event will be streamed live on MEAC Network, and a Cancer Awareness 5K Run/Walk will also be held as part of the conference's community service initiatives.
Why It's Important?
The MEAC Cross Country Championships represent the culmination of the season for Morgan State and other participating teams, offering an opportunity to compete for a conference title. Success at this event can significantly boost team morale, enhance the university's athletic reputation, and potentially lead to individual accolades for top performers. For athletes like Crystal Coke and Natnael Gebremariam, strong performances can solidify their standing as elite collegiate runners. The championship also serves as a platform for the MEAC to showcase its athletic talent and commitment to community engagement through initiatives like the Cancer Awareness 5K, reinforcing the broader values of collegiate sports beyond competition. The live streaming on MEAC Network increases accessibility and visibility for the event and the conference.
What's Next?
Following their participation in the 2026 MEAC Cross Country Championships, the Morgan State cross country teams will conclude their competitive season. The focus will then shift to evaluating individual and team performances, identifying areas for improvement, and planning for the next season. Athletes will likely enter an off-season training regimen to maintain fitness and prepare for future competitions. For the MEAC, the championship will conclude with an awards ceremony, recognizing the top teams and individual runners. The conference will also assess the success of the event, including the community service initiative, as it plans for future championships and events.
