What's Happening?
AI Director Ltd, a one-person AI consultancy based in Royal Sutton Coldfield, has successfully matched a top UK university in quality scoring for a £96,000 public procurement tender. The bid was processed through an automated AI pipeline developed by
the consultancy's founder, Simon Steggles. This system, named TenderWatch, scans global government procurement portals to identify contract opportunities. In a live test, the AI system managed to score 70% overall, tying with the university on methodology and surpassing it on cost. The test demonstrated the potential of AI to overcome administrative barriers in public procurement, which have traditionally deterred small businesses.
Why It's Important?
This development highlights the transformative potential of AI in leveling the playing field for small businesses in public procurement. By automating complex administrative tasks, AI can enable smaller firms to compete with larger institutions, potentially increasing their access to lucrative public contracts. This could lead to a more diverse and competitive market, benefiting both businesses and public sector entities seeking innovative solutions. The success of AI Director Ltd's approach may encourage other small businesses to adopt similar technologies, fostering innovation and efficiency in the procurement process.
What's Next?
Following the successful test, Simon Steggles plans to enhance the AI system by adding more layers of automation and cross-checking capabilities. The goal is to win tenders outright and secure a place for AI Director Ltd on public sector frameworks. Steggles is also offering to assist other members of the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce in exploring how AI can help them access public sector contracts. This initiative could lead to broader adoption of AI in procurement, further democratizing access to public contracts for small businesses.
