What's Happening?
Airbus is set to incorporate technology from its A321XLR model, including a revised wing design, into the A321neo. This move is part of a broader initiative to enhance the performance and production maturity of its single-aisle aircraft family. The A321XLR features
a lighter wing with a single-slotted inboard flap, which will replace the current double-slotted design on the A321neo. Additionally, the A321neo will benefit from a take-off performance improvement system that introduces intermediate flap positions. These changes are part of a series of incremental improvements known as STEP4. The A320neo will initially receive these enhancements to ensure production maturity before they are applied to the A321neo and its XLR variant. The A320neo will also feature a new 'cobra' duct for the auxiliary power unit and corrosion-prevention measures. Airbus aims to integrate as many XLR innovations as possible into the A320neo, excluding wing-related changes.
