What's Happening?
Seoul Design Week 2026, co-hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Design Foundation, concluded successfully after running from October 14 to October 25. The event attracted 670,000 visitors over its 12-day duration. This year, the festival
expanded its reach beyond Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) to include 150 design spots across five districts of Seoul. A total of 871 companies and brands, 370 designers, and 353 university students participated, fostering interaction between the design industry and emerging talent. The event also featured the Seoul Design Award, which received 1,204 projects from 91 countries, and various international exchange programs. This year's event held particular significance as it marked 20 years since Mayor Oh Se-hoon initiated the 'Design Seoul' declaration in 2006, aiming to elevate the city's stature and improve citizens' lives through design. Industry exchange programs, such as the DDP Design Fair co-hosted with 29CM, connected design brands with consumers and young designers with companies, drawing 35,000 visitors.
Why It's Important?
The successful conclusion of Seoul Design Week 2026 underscores Seoul's growing prominence as a global design hub. The event's expanded scope and high visitor turnout demonstrate a strong public and industry interest in design, which can stimulate economic growth and cultural exchange. By connecting design brands with consumers and young designers with companies, the event fosters innovation and creates new business opportunities within the design sector. The international participation in the Seoul Design Award and various exchange programs positions Seoul as a key player in global design trends, potentially attracting foreign investment and talent. The Mayor's vision to integrate design into everyday life and lead world design trends could enhance the city's quality of life and global competitiveness. This initiative also provides a platform for emerging designers to gain industry experience and for companies to discover fresh perspectives, contributing to the long-term vitality of the design ecosystem.
What's Next?
Building on the success of Seoul Design Week 2026, the Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to further expand global design exchange through the upcoming 2027 World Design Congress, which will be held in Seoul. A preview of the 2027 World Design Congress, including its official brand identity and slogan 'Think, Make, Change,' was unveiled during this year's event, sharing Seoul's design vision with the world. The city also intends to strengthen support for Seoul's design companies and talent to help them advance onto the global stage. This includes incorporating feedback from visitors into the development of future Seoul merchandise and launching new products tailored to international visitors' preferences. Continued collaborations with private companies are expected to boost global competitiveness and expand the reach of Seoul's design brands and K-design.
Beyond the Headlines
The emphasis on design as a tool for urban development and improving citizens' lives, as highlighted by Mayor Oh Se-hoon's 'Design Seoul' initiative, reflects a broader global trend where cities leverage creative industries for economic and social advancement. The integration of design into various aspects of urban living, from public spaces to consumer products, can foster a unique cultural identity and enhance a city's appeal. The focus on nurturing young talent and facilitating industry-academic collaboration suggests a strategic approach to building a sustainable design ecosystem. Furthermore, the event's role in cultural diplomacy, connecting Seoul's design scene with the world, demonstrates how creative fields can serve as soft power, promoting international understanding and cooperation. The long-term impact could be a more design-conscious society and a stronger global presence for Korean design.
