What's Happening?
A group of Keuka College students recently participated in a 10-day Barcelona Field Period, led by Assistant Professor of Marketing Janice Gaub. The program aimed to broaden students' worldviews through a combination of language studies, cultural immersion,
and opportunities to connect their experiences to their academic interests. Each weekday included three hours of intensive Spanish language instruction at a local language school, where students were placed according to their proficiency levels and studied alongside international peers. The Field Period, titled 'Futbol, Fashion, and Fun in Barcelona,' integrated cultural exploration with academic learning for students across various disciplines, including management, criminology, education, occupational therapy, and applied mathematics. Students visited historic landmarks like Antoni Gaudí’s Sagrada Família basilica, toured FC Barcelona’s stadium, and met with local business leaders, such as the director of the language school, to understand operational management.
Why It's Important?
This program is significant for U.S. higher education as it exemplifies the value of international experiential learning. For Keuka College students, the Barcelona Field Period provided a crucial opportunity to develop global competencies, which are increasingly vital in today's interconnected world. By immersing themselves in a different culture and language, students enhanced their problem-solving skills, boosted their confidence, and gained a broader perspective on global issues. The integration of academic interests with cultural experiences, such as a criminology major observing public safety practices or management majors analyzing local businesses, allows for a practical application of classroom knowledge. This type of hands-on learning can significantly impact students' career readiness and personal development, preparing them to be more adaptable and culturally aware professionals in various U.S. industries and beyond.
What's Next?
Keuka College is expected to continue offering similar international field periods, recognizing their profound impact on student development. Students who participated in the Barcelona program will likely integrate their experiences into their academic work and future career paths, potentially influencing their choice of specialization or their approach to professional challenges. The success of this program may also encourage other U.S. educational institutions to expand their own cultural immersion and study abroad opportunities, further emphasizing the importance of global education. Future programs will likely continue to blend language acquisition, cultural exploration, and academic application to provide comprehensive and transformative experiences for students.
Beyond the Headlines
The Barcelona Field Period underscores a deeper educational philosophy that values learning beyond traditional classroom settings. It highlights the transformative power of direct cultural engagement in fostering empathy, critical thinking, and a nuanced understanding of global interconnectedness. For students, experiencing daily life in a foreign country, navigating new social norms, and communicating in a different language can lead to profound personal growth and a re-evaluation of their own cultural perspectives. This kind of immersion helps dismantle ethnocentric viewpoints and cultivates a more inclusive worldview, which is essential for addressing complex global challenges. The program also demonstrates how academic disciplines, from criminology to business, can be enriched and recontextualized through international exposure, making learning more dynamic and relevant to real-world complexities.
