What's Happening?
SKIMS, a brand primarily known for shapewear and apparel, is significantly expanding its presence in the sportswear market. This strategic shift involves collaborations with major sports entities like the NBA, WNBA, and USA Basketball, alongside a partnership
with Nike. The company launched SKIMS Mens, followed four days later by these sports deals. SKIMS is also engaging in campaigns with prominent WNBA athletes such as Candace Parker, Cameron Brink, and Skylar Diggins-Smith. The brand's entry into sportswear aims to tap into new customer segments, particularly those not traditionally reached by Nike, while leveraging Nike's technical product expertise and global sports infrastructure. This expansion is designed to convert SKIMS' existing customer base into a broader sportswear consumer group.
Why It's Important?
This move is significant for both the fashion and sports industries. For SKIMS, it represents a substantial diversification of its business model, moving beyond its core shapewear offerings to capture a larger share of the lucrative sportswear market. The partnership with Nike is particularly impactful, as it allows SKIMS to immediately gain credibility and access to advanced sportswear manufacturing and distribution capabilities that would otherwise take years to build. For Nike, the collaboration provides access to a customer demographic that it has struggled to fully engage, with only 20% of SKIMS shoppers having purchased Nike products in the past year. This strategic alliance could redefine how fashion and athletic brands collaborate, potentially leading to new market penetration strategies and product innovations. The focus on WNBA athletes and Team USA also highlights a growing recognition of the purchasing power and influence of female sports fans, who represent an estimated $1.3 trillion in purchasing power.
What's Next?
SKIMS will continue to build recognition in the sports sector, as only 3% of consumers associated the brand with the Olympics prior to the Paris 2024 Games, compared to 64% for Nike. The company's strategy includes leveraging its early involvement with organizations like LOVB, whose youth network spans 24,000 athletes and whose USA Volleyball membership is 88% female, creating a pipeline for future customers. The initial launch of the NikeSKIMS collaboration, featuring seven collections and 58 silhouettes, has already shown promising results, doubling SKIMS' direct-to-consumer sales in its first two days, increasing customer count by over 50%, and boosting average ticket size by over 30%. This indicates a strong market reception and suggests further expansion in product lines and athletic endorsements are likely as SKIMS solidifies its position in the competitive sportswear landscape.
Beyond the Headlines
The expansion of SKIMS into sportswear, particularly through its partnership with Nike, reflects a broader trend of convergence between fashion and athletic wear. This collaboration challenges traditional brand boundaries and highlights the increasing importance of lifestyle branding in consumer markets. It also underscores the growing influence of celebrity endorsements and social media in driving consumer trends, as SKIMS has effectively utilized its brand recognition and athlete partnerships to enter a new sector. The focus on WNBA and female sports, in general, also points to a significant cultural shift, where women's sports are gaining more mainstream attention and economic power. This could lead to more inclusive marketing strategies and product development across the sportswear industry, catering to a more diverse range of athletes and consumers.
