What's Happening?
Backstage Organics, a company specializing in backstage hospitality and wellness services for touring artists and festivals, has announced its first artist-management client: singer-songwriter Pat Simmons Jr. Founded by Scott Franklin Manning, Backstage Organics will
now manage Simmons Jr.'s career, including routing his inaugural national tour scheduled for summer 2027. Simmons Jr., the son of Doobie Brothers co-founder Patrick Simmons, is known for his blend of roots reggae, folk, and classic rock, performed in English and Hawaiian. He is also an organic farmer and cancer survivor, living on a family farm in Maui where he practices homesteading and reforestation.
Why It's Important?
This move signifies an expansion for Backstage Organics into artist management, potentially offering a more holistic approach to supporting touring musicians by integrating wellness and hospitality with career development. For Pat Simmons Jr., this partnership could elevate his national profile and provide structured support for his music career, which has previously seen him open for the Doobie Brothers and receive nominations for Hawaii's highest music honor. The emphasis on long-term relationships with intimate venues, as stated by Manning, suggests a strategy focused on sustainable career growth rather than fleeting success, which could influence how emerging artists are managed in the music industry.
What's Next?
Scott Franklin Manning is currently routing Pat Simmons Jr.'s summer 2027 tour, which will span from Northern California to upstate New York. The focus is on establishing long-term relationships with venues ranging from 500 to 1,500 capacity, as well as engaging with jam band, bluegrass, and reggae festivals. Manning is also actively seeking collaborative recording opportunities and partnerships for Simmons Jr. with prominent artists in the reggae and jam band scenes. Simmons Jr. plans to relocate to the Northern California coast in late spring 2027 to establish a new home base for recording and farming while continuing to tour.
Beyond the Headlines
The signing of Pat Simmons Jr. by Backstage Organics highlights a growing trend in the entertainment industry where artist management is evolving to encompass broader aspects of an artist's well-being and lifestyle. Simmons Jr.'s background as an organic farmer and advocate for 'Aloha ʻĀina' (love of the land) adds a unique dimension to his artistic brand, potentially appealing to audiences interested in sustainability and conscious living. This integrated approach, combining music, wellness, and personal values, could set a precedent for how artists are developed and marketed, moving beyond purely commercial metrics to include authenticity and social responsibility.
