What's Happening?
Karma Automotive has unveiled the Eximius 1, a unique, one-off supercar that dramatically re-engineers the basic Fisker Karma platform. This new model replaces the original three-cylinder series hybrid powertrain with a potent 6.2-liter V-8 engine, delivering
550 horsepower. Combined with 645 horsepower from its batteries, the Eximius 1 boasts a peak system output of 1200 horsepower, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in a claimed 2.7 seconds. The vehicle is also equipped with carbon ceramic brakes and a semi-active Ohlins suspension to manage its immense power. Beyond its performance upgrades, the Eximius 1 features outrageous styling changes, including massive aero elements on the front fenders and rear doors, highlighted by contrasting white accents. A front splitter, rear wing, and rear diffuser are adorned with LED running lights, ensuring visibility day and night. The interior has been revamped with bright blue and white Alcantara materials, Recaro bucket seats, and a rear center console featuring an Eximius-branded carbon fiber helmet. Karma Automotive has not disclosed the identity of the commissioning client, but notes that the number '5' on the car holds particular significance for them.
Why It's Important?
The Karma Eximius 1 represents a significant departure for Karma Automotive, showcasing their capability to push the boundaries of performance and design beyond their established hybrid models. This one-off creation demonstrates the company's engineering prowess and willingness to cater to bespoke, high-performance demands, potentially attracting a new segment of ultra-luxury and performance-oriented clientele. While not a mass-production vehicle, the Eximius 1 serves as a halo car, enhancing Karma's brand image and demonstrating its technical versatility. The integration of a powerful V-8 engine with electric battery power highlights a trend in the automotive industry where traditional combustion engines are being combined with electric powertrains to achieve extreme performance, even as the industry shifts towards full electrification. This project could also influence future design and engineering choices for Karma's upcoming two-door GT and SUV models, signaling a more aggressive and performance-focused direction for the brand.
What's Next?
As a one-off build, the Karma Eximius 1 will not be available for purchase at dealerships, making it an exclusive creation for its undisclosed commissioning client. However, the technological advancements and design elements showcased in the Eximius 1 could potentially influence Karma Automotive's future production models. The company has announced plans for a new two-door GT and an SUV, and the performance and styling cues from the Eximius 1 might find their way into these upcoming vehicles, albeit in a more refined and production-friendly form. This project serves as a statement of intent from Karma, signaling their ambition to compete in the high-performance luxury segment. The public's reaction to this extreme build will likely be monitored by Karma, providing insights into market appetite for such high-powered, custom vehicles and informing their long-term product strategy.
Beyond the Headlines
The Karma Eximius 1, while a singular creation, reflects broader trends in the luxury automotive market, particularly the increasing demand for bespoke, ultra-high-performance vehicles that blend cutting-edge technology with personalized aesthetics. This trend highlights a shift towards experiential luxury, where exclusivity and customization are paramount. The car's blend of a large V-8 engine with electric power also touches upon the ongoing debate and evolution within the automotive industry regarding the future of powertrains. While many manufacturers are fully committing to electric vehicles, the Eximius 1 demonstrates that there is still a market for hybrid solutions that offer the visceral experience of a powerful internal combustion engine alongside the instant torque and efficiency benefits of electric motors. This approach caters to enthusiasts who may not be ready to fully abandon traditional engine sounds and feel, while still embracing advanced technology. The secrecy surrounding the client also adds to the mystique, underscoring the allure of anonymity and personalized luxury at the highest echelons of wealth.
