Quantm Group LLC, the developer behind the $18 billion Project Gold data center campus in North Pocono, Pennsylvania, has drastically revised its plans following strong community opposition. The initial proposal, which included up to 1,000 backup generators,
a potential nuclear reactor, and an estimated daily water consumption of 1 million gallons, has been scaled back. The new application filed in Covington Township outlines a project with six single-story data centers, a significant reduction from the original 35. The revised plan eliminates the need for numerous backup generators by incorporating a 750 to 900-megawatt grid-connected on-site battery storage system, owned and operated by PPL. Water demands have also been substantially cut to just over 8,500 gallons per day, utilizing a closed-loop cooling system and treated wastewater. The project will now rely entirely on grid-supplied electricity, with the developer funding all necessary infrastructure upgrades.
