What's Happening?
Henox IT and Data Centers, an India-based company, has unveiled plans for a new subsea cable system named Henox Crest. This project aims to establish a series of carrier-neutral landing hubs along India’s coastline, creating a coastal digital infrastructure
corridor. The Henox Crest cable will connect key digital and international gateways across Gujarat, Mangaluru, Kochi, Chennai, and Visakhapatnam. The western hub in Gujarat is designed to serve as a focal point for data centers, hyperscalers, and financial institutions, with onward connectivity extending to the UAE, the Middle East, Europe, and Africa. On the east coast, the cable will interconnect with SubConnex at Visakhapatnam, providing connectivity towards Singapore, Malaysia, and the U.S. west coast. Each landing point will function as an open Point of Presence (PoP), allowing operators to connect networks, exchange traffic, and build new subsea and terrestrial systems. Henox has partnered with APTelecom as its strategic technical and commercial partner for this initiative.
Why It's Important?
The Henox Crest subsea cable system is critical for India's digital infrastructure, addressing the growing demand for international internet capacity driven by AI, cloud services, and hyperscale data centers. By creating multiple new carrier-neutral landing points, the project aims to reduce single points of failure and enhance the resilience and diversity of India's connectivity, which is currently concentrated in Mumbai and Chennai. This increased redundancy is vital given recent subsea cable disruptions. For U.S. businesses and technology companies, improved connectivity to India means faster, more reliable data transfer, facilitating operations, cloud services, and AI development. It also positions India as a more robust digital bridge between the U.S. west coast and other global markets, potentially boosting trade and technological collaboration. The project will benefit hyperscalers and enterprises by providing low-latency access to digital services, fostering economic growth and innovation.
What's Next?
Henox IT and Data Centers will proceed with the development and deployment of the Henox Crest subsea cable system, working closely with its partner APTelecom on strategic planning, commercial development, and international partnerships. The next phases will involve securing necessary permits, conducting marine surveys, and manufacturing and laying the cable. Concurrently, Henox plans to build an integrated ecosystem of terrestrial networks, edge data centers, and strategic compute infrastructure along the Henox Crest corridor. This will bring connectivity and compute resources closer to emerging demand centers. The project's progress will be closely watched by telecommunications companies, data center operators, and hyperscalers, who will be keen to leverage the new, diversified connectivity options. The successful completion of Henox Crest is expected to significantly alter India's digital landscape and its role in global data traffic.
Beyond the Headlines
The Henox Crest project signifies a strategic shift in global digital infrastructure, moving towards more distributed and resilient network architectures. By decentralizing internet gateways, India is not only bolstering its own digital security but also setting a precedent for other nations to diversify their international connectivity. This initiative has profound implications for geopolitical stability, as robust and redundant internet infrastructure can mitigate risks associated with single points of failure, which could be vulnerable to natural disasters or malicious attacks. Furthermore, the emphasis on 'carrier-neutral' and 'open PoP' models promotes greater competition and innovation within the telecommunications sector, potentially leading to more affordable and higher-quality internet services. This project also underscores the increasing importance of subsea cables as critical national infrastructure, essential for economic growth, technological advancement, and global communication in the AI era.
