What's Happening?
Derek Gaskins is set to join OXXO USA as the Vice President of Marketing and Category Management in mid-September. OXXO USA is owned by Fomento Economico Mexicano, S.A.B. de C.V. (FEMSA). In his new role, Gaskins will report directly to CEO Jaime Longoria
and will be responsible for leading marketing, merchandising, foodservice, brand development, category management, loyalty and CRM, customer insights, and supplier partnerships. This move marks Gaskins' return to the convenience-store industry. FEMSA, based in Monterrey, Mexico, entered the U.S. market in October 2024 by acquiring 249 stores from Brentwood, Tennessee-based Delek US. Gaskins previously held positions at Hotel Chocolat U.S. as head of retail, bp as head of guest experience, and spent seven years as Chief Marketing Officer at Yesway. He has also worked with Rutter’s, the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS), Giant Eagle, and Procter & Gamble.
Why It's Important?
Gaskins' appointment is significant for OXXO USA as it aims to establish a strong presence in the competitive U.S. convenience retail market. His extensive experience in marketing, category management, and guest experience across various prominent companies in the sector will be crucial for OXXO's commercial growth strategy. His role will involve shaping the brand's identity, optimizing its product offerings, and building customer loyalty, which are vital for success in a market dominated by established players. OXXO, with over 26,000 global locations, is making a concerted effort to expand in the U.S., and Gaskins' leadership is expected to drive this expansion. His focus on creating a 'neighborhood-relevant, food-forward, loyalty-driven convenience experience' could differentiate OXXO from competitors and cater to evolving consumer demands, potentially impacting market share and competitive dynamics within the U.S. convenience store industry.
What's Next?
Gaskins will transition out of his current role at Hotel Chocolat over the next few weeks as a successor is identified. Upon joining OXXO USA in mid-September, he will immediately begin implementing strategies to drive the company's commercial engine. His initial focus will likely be on integrating his vision for marketing, merchandising, and customer engagement with OXXO's existing U.S. operations. The industry will be watching to see how OXXO, under Gaskins' commercial leadership, executes its growth plans and how its 'neighborhood-relevant' approach resonates with American consumers. This move is expected to intensify competition within the U.S. convenience store sector, potentially prompting other major players to re-evaluate their own marketing and category management strategies to maintain their market positions.
Beyond the Headlines
This strategic hire by OXXO USA highlights a broader trend of international companies leveraging experienced U.S. talent to navigate and penetrate the American market. Gaskins' decision to join OXXO, a brand with significant global presence but relatively new to the U.S., underscores the perceived growth potential in the U.S. convenience retail sector. His emphasis on building a 'neighborhood-relevant' and 'food-forward' experience reflects a shift in consumer preferences towards more localized and quality food options within convenience stores. This could set a new benchmark for the industry, pushing competitors to innovate beyond traditional offerings. Furthermore, the move signifies FEMSA's serious commitment to the U.S. market, indicating that the company is not merely testing the waters but is prepared to invest significantly in establishing a strong, long-term presence, potentially altering the competitive landscape for years to come.
