What's Happening?
Vietjet, a Vietnamese airline, is significantly expanding its international network by introducing two new routes: Hanoi–Colombo–Maldives and Danang–Jakarta. The Hanoi–Colombo connection aims to enhance tourism and business travel between Vietnam's capital
and Sri Lanka's commercial center. This expansion builds upon Vietjet's existing Ho Chi Minh City–Colombo service and plans for a Ho Chi Minh City–Maldives connection via Colombo. The new Danang–Jakarta route will link Indonesia's capital with Central Vietnam, offering Indonesian travelers access to one of Vietnam's major coastal tourism destinations. To mark these launches, Vietjet has opened bookings and is offering promotional Eco tickets starting from VND0, excluding taxes and fees, for flights scheduled between November 1, 2026, and October 31, 2027. The Hanoi-Maldives service, with a transit stop in Colombo, is set to commence on February 9, 2027, operating three round-trip flights per week. The Danang-Jakarta service will begin on December 20, 2026, with four round-trip flights per week.
Why It's Important?
This expansion by Vietjet is important for several reasons. Firstly, it strengthens air connectivity between Vietnam and key markets in South and Southeast Asia, fostering increased tourism and business opportunities. The new routes provide travelers with more direct and convenient options to explore destinations like Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Indonesia, which are known for their tourism appeal. For Vietnam, this positions the country as a more significant gateway for regional and long-haul travel, potentially boosting its own tourism sector and economy. The promotional fares offered by Vietjet could stimulate demand, making international travel more accessible and affordable for a broader range of passengers. Furthermore, the increased flight frequencies and new connections contribute to the overall growth and competitiveness of the aviation industry in the region, benefiting related sectors such as hospitality and trade.
What's Next?
The new Hanoi–Colombo–Maldives service is scheduled to commence on February 9, 2027, with three weekly round-trip flights. The Danang–Jakarta service will launch earlier, on December 20, 2026, operating four round-trip flights per week. Vietjet will continue to offer promotional Eco tickets for bookings until November 1, 2026, for travel through October 2027, which is expected to drive early bookings and passenger interest. The airline's strategy includes further expanding its international network and enhancing its onboard experience, which features Vietnamese and international dishes and cultural performances. The success of these new routes will likely influence future expansion plans, potentially leading to more connections and increased frequencies to other destinations in Asia and beyond. The airline's focus on making travel more accessible and enjoyable suggests a continued effort to capture a larger share of the regional travel market.
Beyond the Headlines
The strategic expansion by Vietjet reflects a broader trend of increasing air travel demand and economic integration within Asia. By connecting Vietnam with Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Indonesia, Vietjet is not only facilitating tourism but also potentially strengthening cultural and economic ties between these nations. The Colombo stopover, in particular, offers passengers a dual opportunity to experience both the Maldives' natural beauty and Sri Lanka's rich heritage, promoting multi-destination tourism. This move could also intensify competition among airlines in the region, potentially leading to more competitive pricing and improved services for consumers. The emphasis on promotional fares highlights the airline's strategy to attract new customers and establish a strong presence in these emerging markets, contributing to the overall dynamism of the Asian travel landscape.
