What's Happening?
The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB), in collaboration with the Sri Lanka High Commission in the United Kingdom, conducted a two-day business outreach program in London on October 21 and 22, 2026. The initiative aimed to promote Sri Lanka Expo 2027
and encourage greater participation from UK businesses. The program included a Business and Investment Forum, a networking session, and bilateral business meetings, attracting approximately 140 participants, including British buyers, investors, and representatives from chambers of commerce. The Sri Lankan delegation, led by Hon. Wasantha Samarasinghe, Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development, highlighted the country's economic recovery, with 5% growth in both 2024 and 2025, and a 7.8% expansion in the industrial sector in 2025. Foreign direct investment (FDI) also exceeded US$1 billion in 2025, marking a 72% increase.
Why It's Important?
This outreach program is crucial for Sri Lanka's economic revitalization and its efforts to re-establish itself as a reliable sourcing and investment destination. By engaging directly with UK businesses, Sri Lanka aims to expand market opportunities for its exports and attract foreign direct investment, which is vital for sustainable economic growth. The reported economic recovery, including significant GDP growth and increased FDI, signals a more stable and attractive environment for international investors. For UK businesses, Sri Lanka presents opportunities for diversified sourcing under the UK's Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS), offering preferential market access. Strengthening these ties can lead to increased bilateral trade, job creation, and knowledge transfer, benefiting both economies. The focus on sustainable manufacturing practices and compliance with international quality standards also positions Sri Lanka favorably in a global market increasingly prioritizing ethical and responsible sourcing.
What's Next?
The primary next step is Sri Lanka Expo 2027, scheduled for January 14-17, 2027. This event will serve as a critical platform for Sri Lankan exporters, manufacturers, service providers, and investment promotion agencies to connect with international markets, particularly UK-based companies. The EDB and the Sri Lanka High Commission will continue their efforts to encourage UK participation in the Expo, aiming to translate the interest generated during the London outreach into concrete business partnerships and investments. Further initiatives to improve the regulatory environment, streamline procedures, and enhance transparency in public service delivery are expected to continue, as highlighted by Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe. These ongoing reforms are essential to sustain investor confidence and facilitate the ease of doing business in Sri Lanka.
Beyond the Headlines
The success of Sri Lanka's economic recovery and its ability to attract foreign investment, particularly from a major economy like the UK, could serve as a case study for other developing nations facing similar economic challenges. The emphasis on showcasing economic stability and growth, coupled with efforts to improve the business environment, demonstrates a strategic approach to re-engaging with the global market. The DCTS offers a significant advantage for Sri Lankan exports, highlighting the role of preferential trade agreements in fostering economic development. Furthermore, the focus on sustainable manufacturing practices and international quality standards reflects a broader global shift towards responsible supply chains, which could enhance Sri Lanka's competitive edge in the long term. This initiative also underscores the importance of diplomatic and trade missions in facilitating economic partnerships and promoting national interests on the international stage.
