What's Happening?
Hornets Sports & Entertainment (HSE), along with Lincoln Property Company and Vision Ventures, has formed a joint venture to acquire Queen City Quarter, a 302,324-square-foot mixed-use entertainment, dining, and retail destination in Uptown Charlotte.
The property, formerly known as the EpiCentre, is located at 210 E. Trade Street and spans approximately 3.17 acres. It connects Spectrum Center and the Charlotte Convention Center. Originally opened in 2008, Queen City Quarter includes restaurant, retail, entertainment, and office spaces, with direct links to nearby hotels, the Overstreet Mall, and the LYNX Blue Line light rail. The joint venture aims to reimagine the property, which has seen significant changes in occupancy and activity in recent years, to better serve the Uptown Charlotte community. Rick Schnall, Co-Chairman of Hornets Sports & Entertainment, emphasized the importance of a vibrant Uptown for Charlotte's growth and the commitment to creating a welcoming destination.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition is significant for Charlotte's economic development, particularly in the Uptown area. The revitalization of Queen City Quarter is expected to restore energy to the district, attracting more residents, visitors, and fans, which could boost local businesses and create jobs. Hornets Sports & Entertainment's involvement, extending its commitment beyond Spectrum Center, signals a broader investment in the urban core. Vision Ventures, having previously owned and successfully repositioned the property from 2010 to 2015, brings valuable experience and local market knowledge to the venture. The project aims to enhance the overall experience of Uptown Charlotte, contributing to its continued emergence as a leading U.S. city and potentially increasing property values and commercial activity in the surrounding areas.
What's Next?
The joint venture will continue to evaluate opportunities for the Queen City Quarter property. Additional details regarding their plans for repositioning the asset are expected to be shared as the process moves forward. This initiative follows HSE's recent investment in the new state-of-the-art Novant Health Performance Center, located across from Spectrum Center and set to open in spring 2027, further solidifying their commitment to Uptown Charlotte's development. The collaboration between a major sports and entertainment organization and experienced real estate firms suggests a comprehensive approach to transforming the mixed-use destination, with potential future announcements on new tenants, renovations, or community engagement programs.
Beyond the Headlines
The acquisition of Queen City Quarter by this joint venture highlights a growing trend of sports organizations investing in broader urban development projects. This move by Hornets Sports & Entertainment demonstrates a strategic vision that extends beyond sports and entertainment venues to encompass the surrounding urban fabric. Such investments can foster a symbiotic relationship between sports franchises and their host cities, where the success of one contributes to the vitality of the other. It also underscores the importance of mixed-use developments in creating dynamic urban environments that cater to diverse needs, from entertainment and dining to retail and office spaces, ultimately shaping the cultural and economic landscape of the city.
