What's Happening?
The television series 'Cool Sweepings,' a Jamaican Canadian curling comedy, has premiered on Bell Fibe TV1, accompanied by the release of 'Cool Sweepings: The Album (Original TV Series Soundtrack).' This 12-track album is being touted as the world's first
curling-inspired album, featuring hip hop, rap, reggae, R&B, and EDM. The show's creator and producer, Chris Sharpe, spent 18 years pitching the concept before it was greenlit. A unique aspect of the production is that all four lead actors—Joshua Calder (SleepyZay), Darryan Edwards (Young Prince), Nathan Zayac (Knathan), and Dillin Morgan (Dill The Giant)—are also recording artists who perform on the soundtrack. The series follows Chris, a Jamaican Canadian teenager, as he tries to save his family's struggling curling rink by entering a bonspiel with a $50,000 grand prize, despite having no money or curling experience.
Why It's Important?
This project is significant for its innovative blend of cultural representation, sports, and music, breaking new ground in entertainment. By featuring Jamaican Canadian characters in a curling comedy, 'Cool Sweepings' challenges traditional narratives and offers a fresh perspective on Canadian identity. The integration of the show's actors as musical artists on the soundtrack creates a unique cross-media experience, potentially setting a new trend in how television series engage with music. Furthermore, Chris Sharpe's nearly two-decade journey to bring this vision to life highlights the perseverance required in the entertainment industry and the importance of diverse storytelling. The project also aims to inspire young Black Canadians in film, television, and music, demonstrating that diverse stories from underrepresented communities can achieve global reach and create new entertainment franchises.
What's Next?
The 'Cool Sweepings' television series is currently available on Bell Fibe TV1, and its original soundtrack is streaming worldwide. Beyond the initial release, the creators are planning to expand the 'Cool Sweepings' universe. This includes live curling events, such as the Cool Sweepings Curling League, which began on November 8 at Fort Rouge Curling Club, and the Cool Sweepings Curling Bonspiel scheduled for April 16-18, 2027, at the same venue. Merchandise related to the series is also part of the broader strategy. The creators aim for the project to grow into a significant entertainment franchise, inspiring other creators, particularly young Black Canadians, to pursue their dreams in the film, television, and music industries, regardless of their origin.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'Cool Sweepings' project delves deeper than just entertainment by addressing themes of cultural representation, perseverance, and community building. Chris Sharpe's motivation stemmed from a lack of Black creators and Black-led stories reflecting his own experiences in Manitoba, leading him to found Black Film Space Manitoba. This initiative underscores the critical need for diverse voices in media to create content that resonates with broader audiences and provides role models for aspiring artists from underrepresented backgrounds. The series' success, after 18 years of rejections, also serves as a powerful narrative about resilience and the belief in one's vision. It highlights how local stories, when authentically told, can achieve national and even global recognition, fostering a sense of pride and identity within specific communities while entertaining a universal audience.
