Realta Fusion, a venture-backed company specializing in compact, modular fusion energy systems, has partnered with MGE Energy, the parent company of Madison Gas and Electric (MGE), to explore the joint
development of a 200-megawatt fusion energy power plant in Wisconsin. This collaboration represents a first-of-its-kind investment in fusion technology by a utility company. MGE Energy has already made an equity investment in Realta Fusion and will provide equipment, engineering, and technical support. The agreement also includes assistance for siting, permitting, interconnection, and financing of the plant. The goal is to have the plant operational by the 2030s, contributing to MGE's commitment to achieve net-zero carbon electricity by 2050. Realta Fusion's technology is based on magnetic mirror fusion, developed from research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The company recently announced plans to lease approximately 250,000 square feet for its research and development facility, the Realta Forge, at the former Oscar Mayer plant site in MGE's service territory.
