What's Happening?
At the AWWA ACE26 conference, Xylem Global Product Manager Eric Toffin introduced the SmartBall X, an advanced inline inspection tool designed to enhance pipeline infrastructure management. The technology allows utilities to conduct proactive maintenance
by detecting leaks, gas pockets, and pressure anomalies while mapping the precise location of pipelines. This tool operates within pressurized pipelines, collecting data without interrupting service. The integration of artificial intelligence accelerates data processing, enabling utilities to receive leak detection results promptly. SmartBall X is applicable to both drinking water and wastewater systems, helping utilities improve asset management and reduce non-revenue water.
Why It's Important?
The SmartBall X represents a significant advancement in infrastructure management, offering utilities a proactive approach to maintaining critical pipeline systems. By enabling early detection of issues, the technology can help prevent costly repairs and service disruptions, ultimately extending the lifespan of infrastructure assets. The ability to map pipeline locations accurately also aids in strategic planning and investment decisions. As utilities face increasing pressure to do more with limited budgets, tools like SmartBall X provide a means to enhance operational efficiency and sustainability. This innovation is particularly relevant as aging infrastructure and water scarcity become pressing concerns.
