What's Happening?
Subaru of America has announced changes to its 2027 Crosstrek model lineup, primarily affecting pricing and available trims. The Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for most 2027 Crosstrek trims will remain the same as the 2026 models, starting
at $26,995 for the base model. However, the Limited Hybrid trim will see a $1,000 price increase, bringing its MSRP to $35,995, and will now include a standard power moonroof. A significant change is the discontinuation of the gas-powered Crosstrek Sport trim, making the Sport model exclusively hybrid for 2027. The destination and delivery fee for all 2027 models will also increase by $55, from $1,420 to $1,475. Other updates include a new Harman Kardon package for the Limited trim and changes to available exterior colors, with Alpine Green being replaced by Tidepool Teal Pearl, and Sapphire Blue Pearl becoming exclusive to hybrid models.
Why It's Important?
These adjustments by Subaru of America reflect a broader industry trend towards electrification and hybrid vehicle offerings. The decision to make the Crosstrek Sport trim hybrid-only signals Subaru's commitment to expanding its hybrid portfolio and potentially phasing out certain gas-only options. For consumers, this means fewer choices for gas-powered Sport models, pushing them towards hybrid alternatives which come with a higher price point, even if other trims maintain their MSRP. The slight increase in destination and delivery fees, while minor, contributes to the overall cost of ownership. The inclusion of a standard moonroof in the Limited Hybrid could be seen as added value, but it also accompanies the price hike. These changes will influence purchasing decisions for potential Crosstrek buyers, particularly those who preferred the gas Sport model or are sensitive to price increases in hybrid variants.
What's Next?
Prospective buyers of the Subaru Crosstrek will need to consider the updated 2027 lineup and pricing. Those interested in the gas Crosstrek Sport will need to seek out remaining 2026 inventory, as it will no longer be offered for the 2027 model year. The shift towards hybrid-only for the Sport trim suggests that Subaru may continue to expand its hybrid and electric vehicle offerings in the future. Dealerships like Frank Fletcher Subaru will be assisting customers in navigating these changes, helping them decide between available 2026 models and the updated 2027 options based on configuration, color preferences, and the new pricing structure. The market will observe how these changes impact sales and consumer preferences for the Crosstrek line.
Beyond the Headlines
The strategic move by Subaru to discontinue the gas-powered Crosstrek Sport and make the Sport trim hybrid-only highlights the automotive industry's accelerating transition away from purely internal combustion engines. This decision is not just about product offerings but also reflects evolving environmental regulations, consumer demand for more fuel-efficient vehicles, and advancements in hybrid technology. While the immediate impact is on the Crosstrek lineup, it sets a precedent for how Subaru might evolve its other models. This shift could also influence the used car market for the gas Sport models, potentially increasing their value as they become a discontinued variant. Furthermore, it underscores the increasing importance of hybrid technology as a bridge to a fully electric future, balancing performance with environmental considerations.
