What's Happening?
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is migrating more than 2,200 control computers from IBM-owned Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) to Debian Linux. This decision stems from hardware compatibility
issues with newer versions of RHEL. Specifically, RHEL 9 would render approximately 47% of CERN's embedded control computers unsupported, with RHEL 10 further impacting another 17% of the remaining machines. These are not standard office PCs; many are located underground and are directly connected to CERN's accelerators and custom hardware.
