What's Happening?
The East African Community (EAC) recently recognized 26 organizations from six member states at its 2026 Regional Quality Awards held in Kigali, Rwanda. These awards celebrate achievements in quality management, adherence to standards, innovation, and service
delivery across East Africa. The initiative, supported by the European Union through the EU–EAC Market Access Upgrade Programme (MARKUP II) and implemented by the International Trade Centre (ITC), aims to foster a culture of quality and enhance enterprise competitiveness. Nine top awards were distributed across categories such as Company of the Year, Product of the Year, Service of the Year, and Exporter of the Year. Winners and runners-up hailed from Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, and Tanzania. The awards process involves national standards bodies assessing and nominating national winners, who then proceed to the regional competition coordinated by the EAC Secretariat. This platform allows businesses to showcase their achievements beyond their domestic markets.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is crucial for strengthening the economic integration and competitiveness of businesses within the East African Community. By promoting internationally recognized standards and quality management, the awards encourage enterprises to improve their products and services, which can lead to increased customer confidence and expanded market access. EAC Deputy Secretary General Ms. Annette Ssemuwebwa emphasized that consistent improvements in quality can transform businesses, enhance their reputation, and boost competitiveness. Furthermore, Mrs. Chantal Tuyishimre, Permanent Secretary in Rwanda’s Ministry of Trade and Industry, highlighted the importance of supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in meeting these standards, advocating for harmonized requirements and better coordination among regulatory institutions. This support helps businesses translate quality improvements into tangible growth, enabling them to serve both regional and international markets more effectively.
What's Next?
The EAC encourages award recipients to act as ambassadors for quality and standards across the region, sharing their experiences and demonstrating the positive impact of these recognitions on their businesses. This ongoing advocacy is expected to foster continuous improvement and cross-border collaboration among enterprises. The MARKUP II program, which supports this initiative, will continue its efforts to strengthen enterprise competitiveness and expand market access, indicating sustained investment in quality infrastructure and business capacity building. Future efforts will likely focus on making compliance more accessible for SMEs and further harmonizing regional standards to facilitate trade and investment within the EAC and with global partners. The continued emphasis on quality is anticipated to drive further economic integration and enhance the overall quality of goods and services originating from East Africa.
Beyond the Headlines
The EAC Regional Quality Awards signify a broader strategic push towards building economic resilience and fostering sustainable development in East Africa. By emphasizing quality, the region is not only aiming to boost trade but also to build trust in East African goods and services on a global scale. This focus on quality can lead to long-term benefits, including increased foreign direct investment, enhanced consumer protection, and the creation of more resilient supply chains. The collaboration with the European Union through MARKUP II underscores the importance of international partnerships in achieving these goals, highlighting a shared vision for economic growth and stability. Ultimately, by investing in quality, the EAC is investing in the future prosperity of its member states and their citizens, creating a foundation for sustained economic transformation and improved livelihoods.
