Enervoxa, a Canadian climate technology company, is advancing a project in India to extract rare earth elements (REEs) from red mud, a byproduct of aluminum refining. This initiative aims to address the dual challenge of industrial waste management and
the strategic need for critical minerals. Red mud, traditionally seen as an environmental liability, contains valuable substances like REEs, iron oxide, and titanium compounds. Enervoxa has developed a proprietary process over eight years to economically extract these elements. The project is focused on eastern India, leveraging the region's significant aluminum refining capacity. Enervoxa plans to collaborate with major Indian aluminum producers such as Vedanta, Hindalco, and NALCO to secure feedstock and potentially form strategic partnerships.

Enervoxa is in the commercial evaluation phase, exploring two structural models: full in-country processing and concentrate production for export. The company is seeking strategic equity and project financing, with estimated costs between $250 million and $350 million. The project's success hinges on securing partnerships with Indian aluminum producers and navigating regulatory frameworks. If successful, this model could be replicated in other regions with significant red mud accumulations, potentially transforming global rare earth supply chains.
