X-Bow Systems, a solid rocket motor manufacturer based in New Mexico, has unveiled a new drone interceptor named Buckler, designed to address the high costs associated with combating inexpensive drones using expensive interceptors. The Buckler is engineered
to target Group 3 drones, which weigh up to 1,320 pounds and fly below 18,000 feet at speeds under 250 knots. The interceptor is priced at under $100,000 per unit, significantly lower than the multimillion-dollar interceptors currently in use. This development was announced at the 2026 Farnborough Airshow in London, as part of the U.S. industry's efforts to find cost-effective solutions to the increasing threat posed by unmanned aerial systems (UAS). The Buckler's airframe and propulsion system are entirely manufactured in-house by X-Bow, eliminating reliance on external components and reducing production bottlenecks.

The introduction of the Buckler interceptor is significant as it offers a more economical solution to the problem of using expensive interceptors against low-cost drones, a challenge that has been particularly evident in the U.S. military's operations against Iran's Shahed attack drones. The current cost disparity, where a single PAC-3 interceptor costs between $4 million and $35,000 to neutralize a Shahed-136 drone, highlights the need for more affordable alternatives. X-Bow's Buckler aims to provide a scalable and cost-effective capability, potentially saving the U.S. military and its allies substantial resources in ongoing and future conflicts.
