ComEd has announced the successful implementation of its Voltage Optimization (VO) program, which has delivered approximately 100,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy savings to customers in Illinois. The
program involves dynamically controlling utility assets such as substation load tap changers and line regulators to lower delivered voltage, thereby reducing energy consumption by 2% to 3% without requiring changes in customer behavior. This initiative, which began as a targeted energy efficiency study, has expanded into a utility-wide program integrating advanced automation and intelligent preventive maintenance. The program allows for remote, two-way communications with distribution-level capacitor banks, enabling condition-based proactive maintenance and reducing the need for manual inspections.
